These map shows the number of entries of the name
Riegel in the German telephone register, separated by
postal code zones. The zones are of different size in
area, but approximately equal in population (each zone
about 1,000,000 people). The highest frequency is found in the area around Würzburg (132 entries), Augsburg (94 entries) and Nürnberg (87 entries). It extends to the Rhine Area between Black Forest and Bonn, the Palatinate and to Southern Hesse. This area coincides surprisingly well with the region populated by the Franken, a German tribe between the 4th and the 12th century. It is also known that the Franken thrusted forward to Saxonia (which could explain the island around Leipzig/Chemnitz) and Northern Bohemia (not shown on this map - I know some Riegels from there). The Hamburg island could be explained by the fact that people tried to emigrate from Hamburg to America in later times, but finally stayed there. The lowest frequency is in North and East Germany (Cottbus: 0 entries) and East Bavaria. |
