Twelve Catholic families left Osterkappeln and
Belm (near Osnabrueck) on St. James Day, 25 July 1833. They
traveled to Bremen, then Bremerhaven. They landed in New Orleans,
Washington, MO on 28 Oct 1833 and had planned on establishing a
settlement in Illinois, but after their boat sank in St. Louis,
they decided to go up the Missouri River. The families were:
Frederick Riegel, John T. Hustermann, Gerhard Trentman, Henry
Koehring, Adolph Schmertmann, Gerhard H. Uhlenbrock, Rudolph
Uhlenbrock, John H. Buhr, Herman Schwegmann, John Fred Blackman,
William Weber, and John Edelbrock. A diary of their Atlantic
crossing is shown on the next pages.
