Reformed Becherbach Baptismal Register 1748 - 1798

This register is microfilmed as #490046. The original manuscript is stored at Evangelische Archivstelle Boppard. A facsimile copy is at Evangelische Kirche Becherbach.

Different from the Becherbach Parish Register 1640 - 1747, this register contains only baptismal records. Entries appear in chronological order and are not sorted by families. The structure of the entries is: date of birth, name of father, place and occupation, first name of mother (no maiden name!), date of baptism, name of child, names of sponsors.

Example:

28th December 1777 is born to Henrich Riegel resident in Otzweiler and his married wife Anna Elisabetha, a legal son. Christened to reformed confession on 2nd January 1778, and named Peter. Sponsors are Peter Riegel Senior resident in Otzweiler and Maria Margaretha, wife of Daniel Müller, miller and resident in Otzweiler.

I did not find birth records for all persons listed here. In some cases persons are only known as sponsors and I estimated their date of birth.

It was not always easy to find the correct relations between the persons from this register to those of the BPR 1640 - 1747. While there should be no doubt that e.g., the brothers Daniel and Otto from Otzweiler can be identified with Daniel 1.4.3.7 and Otto 1.4.3.8 of the first book, I had problems to relate e.g., Henrich from Becherbach to any parents of BPR 1640 - 1747. In such cases I made the following assumptions:

  1. the person is probably a descendant from parents living in the same town.
  2. people married usually at the age of about 25 years.
  3. sponsors were mostly uncle/aunt, sometimes grandfather/grandmother.

I marked uncertain relationships with a "?".

Why couldn't I find some birth records in BPR 1640 - 1747 ? I re-examined this book for those records and found that the late pages of the 1730's and 40's are not in chronological order. The binding of this pages was obviously damaged. So some pages may have been lost or bound to the wrong family.

1.7.3.1 ?
Henrich Riegel cooper master of Becherbach

We have no records about Henrich’s parents. I assume either Johann Jacob (1.7) or Johann Mattheis (1.7.3) to be his father, because Niclos‘ (1.7) family was the only Riegel family who lived in Becherbach (instead of Otzweiler etc.) that time. With respect to the age, Johann Mattheis is more probable than Johann Jacob.

This Henrich is my ggggg-grandfather.

Data from Vienna Emigration Lists:

Henrich Riegel passed Vienna on 12. 7. 1783 (5 persons) and emigrated to Neu Schowe, Batschka (today Hungary).

Data from Neu Schowe Town Chronicle:

marr.: Elisabeth Heckel, died 1805 at the age of 58
childr.: Emanuel
Karl

Unfortunately, the names of the children do not match to the Becherbach register. A possible explanation could be that they died in the dysentery epidemic 1785, which took away the lifes of many children among the new settlers. Emanuel and Karl could be born after they left Becherbach.

According to the Personenstandsregister Kirn, the family emigrated in 1823 to Brazil under the leadership of Rev. Sauerbronn of Becherbach

Prof. Francisco T. De Albuquerque from Niteroi, Brazil reports:
In 1822, a Lutheran Evangelist Parson Friederich Oswald Sauerbronn, got from the Brazilian Imperial Government a special license, under severe conditions, to bring non-catholic settlers from Germany to Brazil, to be settled in the Swiss Colony of Nova Friburgo. Thus, in 1824, the Ship "Argus", departing from the Port Den Helder, in Holland, reached the Port of Rio de Janeiro, with 342 Lutheran German settlers. In all official records, we verify, related to Riegel family, the following data: (translated from Portuguese)
